Radiata Pine

Overview

Radiata Pine is a plantation softwood widely used for framing, structural elements, and exterior applications when correctly treated. It offers consistent quality and strong value.

With the right hazard-level treatment and detailing, it performs reliably in a variety of environments.

Appearance

  • Colour: pale cream to light yellow; darkens slightly over time.
  • Grain: straight and even; fine uniform texture.
  • Figure: small tight knots depending on grade; generally unobtrusive.
  • Finishing: readily accepts paints and stains; seal end-grain.

Workability

  • Machining: easy to cut and plane; minimal tool wear.
  • Fastening: good nail and screw holding; pre-drill near edges.
  • Gluing: bonds well with common construction adhesives.
  • Finishing: quick to sand; prime before painting for best results.

Performance & durability

Untreated material is best reserved for interior dry use. For exterior or ground-contact exposure, specify the correct treatment level and maintain protective coatings.

  • Use stainless fixings in coastal/exterior applications.
  • Detail to shed water and ventilate assemblies.

Structural/grades

Widely available in graded structural sizes for studs, joists, and beams. Follow span tables and supplier guidance.

  • Confirm grade, MC, and treatment class to match exposure.
